Do Saltless Water Softeners Really Work?

We live in a city that gets their water from a well, so we have horrible water. Our water is so hard that after I shower my scalp is dry if I don't use a ton of conditioner and I have to apply a handful of facial moisturizer just so my face doesn't look like it is going to peel off! I am going to buy a water softener ASAP! However, my question is the same as everyone else..... do the salt free water softeners really work?

It would be so nice to have a smaller system and not deal with the salt. However, from all the facts I have read Salt free Water "Softeners" more or less condition your water, they DO NOT soften your water.  They can descale your water, etc. but they do not actually give you soft water, funny how most of these companies still call their products "water softeners".

So the real question is why would I pay a fortune for something that does not work? So I guess we are going to go buy a SALT water softener sometime soon! I want soft water, not conditioned water... I want to use less conditioner, less laundry detergent, have my drinking glasses look clear and clean, and have soft water!!! So I guess forget the myth that I can have a small salt-less system that works wonders! I guess the saying applies "If it sounds to good to be true it probably is!"

Here is one of the many posts that helped me come to this conclusion:

What do you think? Do any of you own a saltless water softener? Do you like it? Do you recommend sticking to salt water softeners? Feel free to give us your 2 cents in the comments!

I am doing the same research. I'm amazed at how much these systems cost, these people who sell them seem like door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesmen. Any reputable companies out there with a good system that rates well and is affordable?

All that I have read about have mixed reviews. I am going to just go with a salt one from the local home improvement store. I have heard not to go with the cheapest models there either (although most of them have good reviews online). I want soft water though, not just conditioned water - so for the same price I am going to buy a system that actually does the job I am looking for, the only downside is they do take up a lot more room than the salt-less water conditioners!

I have been using a salt softener since 1993. I have very hard water. The system have works great. I also have a reverse osmosis system in the kitchen for drinking water.

this is an awesome blog about water softeners. This can be used to filter the waste water. Thanks for sharing such an important article with us. All the best. Keep on posting.

Awesome! We've been using saltless water softener and pretty impressive result it is more soften than the usual tap water we drink. Well it's healthy to drink filtered water especially to children to keep them away from any disease causes by contaminated water.

I use water softner but it is also okay not to use if there is not much salt. I lived in Noida and water was too salty there. Every 3 months I have to change my water purifier filter in order to get pure water.
